The primary objective of the foundation is to provide a safe and nurturing shelter for dogs that are unable to survive on the streets, are unlikely to be adopted, and have been completely abandoned by their previous owners. Our sanctuary serves as both their final refuge and their first true home. Without our intervention, these animals would have no opportunity to live a secure and dignified life.
Our Chhatarpur, New Delhi shelter is home to over one hundred dogs — including elderly, handicapped, blind, and paralyzed ones, as well as orphaned puppies and aggressive former pets. Many of them are medically sensitive and are currently undergoing treatment. Each of these animals has a unique story of struggle and survival, and our shelter is dedicated to giving them the care, comfort, and dignity they truly deserve.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Animal Birth Control (ABC) is the most humane and effective method for managing and maintaining a healthy population of community animals. In alignment with this principle, the Foundation regularly conducts ABC surgeries with the support of private veterinarians for both our sheltered dogs and neighborhood strays.

The harsh realities of life on the streets often leave animals suffering from accidents, disabilities, and chronic illnesses that require continuous veterinary care. One of our core objectives is to provide dedicated medical treatment, therapy, and lifelong support to such animals, ensuring they receive the specialized attention they deserve at our shelter.

We take up several awareness programmes to educate the general public about the necessity and benefits of animal welfare, caring of stray and pet animals, various myths and realities about animals, common animal diseases and their remedies, how to fight the cruelty to animals in their areas. We also need to spread awareness about first aid in case of animal bites.

A management graduate and an artist, Dorothy Ghosh chose compassion over career when she left a successful and lucrative profession to start this noble mission alongside her mother, Kalyani Ghosh. At the Kalyani Animal Welfare Foundation, Dorothy is the heart and soul of the shelter — treating every animal as her own. She knows every name, every scar, and every story. Her days are spent comforting the old, healing the sick, and giving hope to those who had none. With unshakable dedication, she works endlessly to raise awareness, gather support, and ensure that every animal under her care lives with dignity, comfort, and love.
Moved by her deep compassion for animals, Jolly Dey found her true calling at the Kalyani Animal Welfare Foundation. A graduate and a successful businesswoman, she chose to leave behind a thriving career to devote her time and energy to the service of animals in need. With her arrival, the Foundation gained a new dimension — her rich experience with both animals and management has strengthened every aspect of the organization’s work. Jolly has also played a vital role in spreading awareness about animal welfare, inspiring others to care, protect, and stand up for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Kalyani Ghosh was the heart and inspiration behind the creation of the Kalyani Animal Welfare Foundation. A scholar and a beloved teacher, she blended wisdom and compassion in everything she did, always reaching out to those in distress. She dedicated her entire life’s savings — and much of her pension — to the cause of animal welfare, asking for nothing in return. In the twilight of her life, when she could have enjoyed the comfort she so rightfully deserved, she chose instead a simple, almost Spartan existence so that her beloved four-legged children could live with care, dignity, and love.
